Designed specially for new application, CroswMaker (crossword authoring tool) as a pattern of main editor (CroswMaker is available at homepage for free, too). Descends right from TCustomControl branch and is completeley different from any other grid component. Still no other help, except compiled demo with sources, is not available.
Features:

Unlimited size grid
Two text properties for each cell: big one, centered, and small, appearing in one of cell's corners.
Easily managable cell appearance using style collection.
Reusable styles in several TcrDesignGrids using TcrPaintSettings component.
Transparent cells.
Background bitmap support.
Extended event list (like OnMouseCellEnter or OnAfterAddCell)
TcrCell.Data: pointer property: you can attach other object for each cell.
CustomPaint support to draw cell in any way you want.
~2400 lines of code for free.
