note that some softplc is not hard realtime. It is true that VLC does not support full iec 61131-3 but To my experience ladder and flow chart together does a very good job to control all machine that I have programmed. I have done machine with 19 axis control. and with the help of card supplier, we develop vlc realtime motion and remote io drivers to support my application. VLC do allow 'C' programming, but it is bit complicated, but it can be done with a vlc SDK. I would be very happy if VLC support full iec 61131-3. I have considered many softplc software, 3S software has very good in depth of softplc and few others that i can not remember, but as a develper I always look at the constrain of the softplc, the most problematic is the motion card controller. most softplc vender does not have drivers for motion card from adlink, advantech, which is the most low cost. in fact getting the realtime driver running is a nightmare. A true hard real time pc base system DOSE NOT USE windows .dll and .sys, it should has it's own realtime drivers. only .sys/dll is to map the realtime data to windows application, like opc server. As for PLC, I still do that but as for data gathering it is done using OPC server, and GUI can use delphi or other language to develop.
